Ivy saponins are inhibitors of elastase and hyaluronidase (enzymes that break down elastin and hyaluronic fibers). Thanks to this, they have a stabilizing effect on the structure of the connective tissue and prevent skin aging. At the same time, they soften the skin and epithelium and facilitate the penetration into the tissues of other active ingredients, which has been used in pharmacy and cosmetology. Ivy extracts inhibit the progression of cellulitis symptoms. Cosmetics containing ivy extract are effective and strong in anti-inflammatory and antiseptic properties, preventing excessive keratinization of the epidermis and hair follicles, as well as whitening and cleansing the pores.
The saponins contained in the extracts lower the surface tension. Their use in cosmetics makes it easier for other ingredients to penetrate the skin and dissolve fats. Ivy leaf extracts improve tissue drainage and improve lymph flow. The flavonoid hederagenin contained in them increases the energy demand of cells, thus accelerating the burning of fats. Saponins cause the spread of the so-called water blisters in the skin, which increases the removal of toxins accumulated in it. This improves blood circulation and metabolism in cells. Thanks to such advantages, ivy is used in body shaping, slimming, firming, anti-cellulite and anti-swelling preparations. It can also be found in intimate hygiene products and anti-dandruff products.
